Saving a Dell

The display on my Inspiron 8200 has gone from slightly flaky to totally unusable in a matter of only two days. It started with odd colors during boot - it looked like the red has gone. Then some syncing errors cropped up. After a couple of seconds it would be ok… Now the display has gone compeletely nuts and the beautyfull 1600x1200 pixel display just displays white, out-of-sync lines. Couple that with an increasing number of Windows XP blue screens - and it means you are looking at a lot of trouble. XP blue screens right after booting - and I can’t read what went wrong. The secure startup mode still works, but network, USB and FireWire don’t work. ...

Mobile Phone Decisions

Last week I dropped my P800 3 meters onto a concrete floor. The screen broke so I sent it in for repairs. Today I got a call that the repair is going to cost over CHF300 - a new P800 can be had for about CHF 900. While I like the P800, it has enough warts that I’m considering an alternative. Right now I have re-lived my Handspring Visor and my old R520. I really, really, really liked that I had all my adresses on the phone and being able to call any number without further syncing. ...

52 ways to getting things done

The book “Getting Things Done” by David Allen is one of my all time favorites. David has helped my productivity enormously with his workflow process and most of all the idea, that you need to get all of the things you need to do out of your head and on paper so they will stop nagging you. Now he has written a new book, “Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work ans Life”. It’s a collection of thoughts that he has been sharing on the mailing list of his DavidCo web site, organized and rewritten. The very first chapter, “Cleaning up creates new directions” had me scrambling to do a full brain dump of all the things and projects that I need to be working on. Getting them out on paper (or in my case into LifeBalance has helped me on getting a few things done right away and a much better understanding of what I need to do during the next days and weeks - and boy - there is a lot of things that need to be done. ...
