52 ways to getting things done

The book “Getting Things Done” by David Allen is one of my all time favorites. David has helped my productivity enormously with his workflow process and most of all the idea, that you need to get all of the things you need to do out of your head and on paper so they will stop nagging you. Now he has written a new book, “Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work ans Life”. It’s a collection of thoughts that he has been sharing on the mailing list of his DavidCo web site, organized and rewritten. The very first chapter, “Cleaning up creates new directions” had me scrambling to do a full brain dump of all the things and projects that I need to be working on. Getting them out on paper (or in my case into LifeBalance has helped me on getting a few things done right away and a much better understanding of what I need to do during the next days and weeks - and boy - there is a lot of things that need to be done. ...

Demo of the Zooming User Interface

Jef Raskin commented on my mini-review of his book “The Humane Interface” and provided a link to the demo of the zooming interface. It’s a interactive flash movie, that shows a Zooming User Interface at work. I’m not sure, if the ZUI realy is THE way to represent a large amount of data or not. It seems to be easy enough, but I wonder if this is the right metaphor? On the other hand, Jef has quite a bit more experience with this than I do, so I bow to his expertise. Oh - and in the demo, the missing screenshot of the humane editor is included (and it’s also on the website) ...

Free the last mile

Today I got regular mail from my ADSL ISP (Econophone): Swisscom is changing ADSL speeds and I have to choose my new connection speed. At the office, I currently have 1024/256 which I find is a great ratio for downloads and for keeping all my servers running and responisve. (This blog is served through that line). I pay 145 CHF / month which I find a reasonable price. Now Swisscom obviously thinks, that this speed is cutting into their leased line business, so that speed combination is no longer after October 1st. I have two choices: Downgrade to 600/100 for CHF 74 / month (which is unacceptable for servers) or downgrade/upgrade to 512/512 (for CHF 195 / month). The more interesting speed 1024/512 is priced at 245 / month. ...

Coming back

I managed to close two projects last monday, successfully deploying a new release of a Notes based manual (remember the 15'000 links that needed to be changed) and the productive release of a relational database (with a Notes backed - no, don’t ask) on a corporate intranet. Almost everything went smooth, I have two rather satisfied clients, the two databases link together as they should - life is good! I have some more time to play around, thinking about what to do next. I’m juggling with a couple of ideas, there are some really interesting things that seem to develop - it’s going to be interesting times ahead. ...
